It even edged out China for the top spot for the first time in three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides a hugely successful pandemic response\u2014the nation of 24 million has recorded barely 1,000 cases and eight deaths\u2014that allowed its economy to chug along while others ground to a halt, a significant driver of Taiwan\u2019s economic growth was its semiconductor industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country\u2019s statistics office specifically gave shout-outs to the computer chips sector in reporting its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eng.stat.gov.tw\/ct.asp?xItem=46833&amp;ctNode=3274\">advance estimates of economic data<\/a>&nbsp;last week, crediting \u201cstrong demand for parts of electronics products\u201d in propelling the growth of exports. Reporting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eng.stat.gov.tw\/fp.asp?xItem=46567&amp;CtNode=3274\">third-quarter data<\/a>&nbsp;last November, the office also highlighted the role of semiconductors in driving growth in the manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, sales of semiconductors\u2014tiny electronic devices that power digital devices at the heart of modern industry\u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-semiconductors-idUSKBN2A11AV\">rose 6.5%<\/a>&nbsp;last year, according to US trade group Semiconductor Industry Association. Taiwan,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-01-25\/the-world-is-dangerously-dependent-on-taiwan-for-semiconductors?sref=P6xXtEaF\">a crucial link<\/a>&nbsp;in the global semiconductor supply chain, was well-positioned to meet the burgeoning demand. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1859534\/why-a-taiwanese-chip-maker-is-at-the-heart-of-us-china-tech-fight\/\">world\u2019s largest contract chipmaker<\/a>, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., is headquartered there, where the overwhelming bulk of its manufacturing facilities is located. Last month, TSMC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-tsmc-results\/tsmc-logs-highest-quarterly-profit-sees-record-revenue-and-capital-spending-idUSKBN29J0J6\">reported record profits<\/a>, and is expected to spend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/tsmc-to-spend-up-to-record-28-billion-in-advanced-chips-capacity-11610623587\">an eye-popping $28 billion<\/a>&nbsp;this year on developing chips and expanding plant capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a sense of Taiwan\u2019s outsize role in the world economy, just look at its ripple effects on global car production. Recently, some of the world\u2019s largest automakers from Toyota to Volkswagen have had to slow or halt production due to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/01\/12\/956097426\/lack-of-computer-chips-trips-up-some-automakers\">a shortage of chips<\/a>, which are now used in vehicles for everything from in-car entertainment to parking sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/25\/taiwan-ministry-says-tsmc-will-prioritize-auto-chips-if-possible.html\">Governments and industry executives<\/a>&nbsp;around the world have already pressed Taiwan to ramp up production to ease the car manufacturing logjam. And in the highest-profile meeting between the Biden administration and their Taipei counterparts yet, high-ranking US officials will this week meet with Taiwan\u2019s economics minister to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/u-press-taiwan-tsmc-resolve-084439412.html\">discuss the auto chips crunch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key reason behind Taiwan\u2019s dominance in global semiconductors is the structure of its chips industry, argued two researchers in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160791X13000870#!\">2013 paper<\/a>. In particular, TSMC pioneered the independent chip foundry model, whereby the firm focuses solely on manufacturing chips based on others\u2019 designs. Meanwhile, other Taiwanese semiconductor firms also play highly specialized roles, each focusing on some specific stage in the chips manufacturing process. In doing so, they build leading-edge expertise. Coupled with public policies like government funding, tax benefits, and public infrastructure like the construction of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/Technology\/How-a-small-Taiwanese-city-transformed-the-global-chip-industry\">major science and industrial parks<\/a>, Taiwan created an ecosystem in which the semiconductor industry could flourish and gain international renown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looming over Taiwan\u2019s semiconductor industry, however, is the great power rivalry between the US and China. With semiconductors underpinning strategic technologies over which Washington and Beijing are battling for dominance, TSMC and Taiwan\u2019s other chip makers inevitably find themselves&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/01\/technology\/taiwan-china-tsmc-huawei.html\">on a geopolitical tightrope<\/a>&nbsp;with limited room to maneuver. Already, Taiwanese chipmakers were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-huawei-tech-license\/u-s-gave-no-assurances-to-taiwans-tsmc-for-license-to-sell-to-huawei-official-idINKBN22R38V\">forced to stop selling<\/a>&nbsp;to Chinese tech giant Huawei in light of the Trump administration\u2019s restrictions\u2014not a trivial matter given that Huawei was TSMC\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2020-07-16\/tsmc-shrugs-off-huawei-ban-in-powerful-covid-era-earnings-report?sref=P6xXtEaF\">&nbsp;second largest customer<\/a>&nbsp;in 2019 after Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While unenviable, the stuck-in-the-middle position of TSMC\u2014and by extension, Taiwan\u2019s semiconductor industry as a whole\u2014may at least provide some measure of stability, argues Thomas Shattuck, a research associate at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile TSMC\u2019s current situation is not ideal, being stuck in the middle of a tech war is perhaps the best, most stable situation available for now,\u201d he wrote in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpri.org\/article\/2021\/01\/stuck-in-the-middle-taiwans-semiconductor-industry-the-u-s-china-tech-fight-and-cross-strait-stability\/\">a recent research paper<\/a>, because neither the US nor China can afford to lose TSMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1968011\/semiconductors-made-taiwan-asias-top-performing-economy-in-2020\/\">Semiconductors helped make Taiwan Asia\u2019s top-performing economy in 2020<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taiwan\u2019s economy expanded 2.98% in 2020, making it&#038;nbsp [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":1245,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,5],"tags":[161,163],"class_list":["post-1963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-watch","category-news-articles","tag-semiconductors","tag-taiwan"],"blocksy_meta":{"styles_descriptor":{"styles":{"desktop":"","tablet":"","mobile":""},"google_fonts":[],"version":6}},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
